About

In 2007, a collaboration between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the San Diego-based non profit Heads On Fire allowed for the creation of an advanced digital design and fabrication laboratory where community members can utilize high-tech tools to actualize ideas through design and fabrication.

The Fab Lab in San Diego was cited in San Diego by Executive Director Xavier Leonard and Program Director Katie Rast through Heads On Fire. Heads On Fire is a multimedia development and technology-training program that has worked for six years toward bridging the Digital Divide within San Diego, advancing the place of techno-literacy within our community. HOF has provided access to skill development for the information economy, and has introduced programs that address empowerment, education, innovation, production and creativity.

Today, The Fab Lab San Diego functions with the same goal of extending access to the benefits of technology to those who stand to benefit from creative learning experiences. Additionally, the Fab Lab SD is expanding its services to include custom design, workshops, and membership options for adult learners and professionals.
