Access – Digital Design and Fabrication

In Partnership with ACCESS, on November 2013, Fab Lab San Diego deployed a Digital Design and Fabrication program to introduce young adults to vector artwork design, Vinyl Cutter operation, and 3D printing.

Students learned about tools and design principles to design logos, decals and stickers. They began learning about 2D vector design by working with the industry-standard graphic design software Adobe Illustrator. We learned to create graphics, lettering and logos and export them as outlines to be cut on a CNC vinyl cutter. By using a simple CNC (computer numerically controlled) machine, students are able to learn the fundamentals of workflow and how to prepare files for digital fabrication.

The class was also exposed to 3D printing on a field trip to the New Central Library where they had a demonstration on how 3D printers work and became familiar working in a 3D Design Environment by learning how to use tinkercad to design 3D models that were later printed on the 3D Printers available at the library.

We would like to thanks Roshawn Brady from ACCESS and Uyen Tran from the New Central Library for their dedication and contribution to make this another successful FabLabSD Youth Program.
