The Light Trees

The Light Trees were inspired by Tina Seddone’s art project for the 2009 Burning Man festival. After she was unable to continue working on her project, Bill Watson, a professional Electronics Engineer, continued the ongoing development of the lighting technology he was working on and took up the task of making a sculpture for his illuminated leaves.

The lighting technology came from Bill’s desire to convey ideas and emotions using light and form, the leaves glow with vibrant colors and patterns, and were also responsive to a variety of stimulus, such as sound and movement and were programmed to allow the participants to directly control the colors and patterns of the luminous leaves.

FabLabSD collaborated with Bill developing initial prototypes for the leaves and laser etching the final designs on acrylic.
