San Diego Youth Symphony & Conservatory

Since 1945, San Diego Youth Symphony (SDYS) has given thousands of musicians the opportunity to study and perform classical repertoire at a highly advanced level. It is the sixth oldest continuously operating youth orchestra in the United States and the resident youth orchestra in the City of San Diego’s historic Balboa Park. SDYS’ program has grown during the thirteen-year tenure of Artistic Director Jeff Edmons from one orchestra to three advanced symphony orchestras and four large ensembles for students at the intermediate and introductory levels. In addition, the organization now trains over fifty students of all levels in chamber music, including string quartets and octet, wind and brass ensembles, advanced percussion, and jazz.

As the region’s leading youth music program, SDYS attracts student musicians of all skill levels from across San Diego County as well as neighboring Imperial and Riverside counties. SDYS’ musical excellence has been recognized nationally with a Music Alive/League of American Orchestras “Composer-in-Residence” award. In its 63 years history, the orchestra has performed 13 foreign concert tours in 18 foreign countries. It now hosts the only International Youth Symphony exchange program organized by Rotary International Youth Exchange.

SDYS student musicians routinely participate in national and international music camps, including Tanglewood, Interlochen, Aspen, and the Kennedy Center . In addition to students’ musical successes while enrolled with SDYS, many have gone on to leading conservatories and professional careers in performance, composition, and music education.

The Fab Lab in San Diego is one of over thirty in the Global Fab Lab Network, and the only on the US West Coast. Around the globe, people have utilized the tools associated with the Fab Lab to create the things that they desire or need. This has ranged from innovations related to communications technologies to arts and handicrafts. Most of these have been created by newcomers to such technologies, many by youth.

The Fab Lab San Diego offers multiple services within the community:

Serving youth through hands-on learning experiences related to to technology and science that prepare them to be self-assured players in their college and career undertakings is a core value of the Fab Lab SD.

Small business development and incubation, as well as expanded access to innovative opportunities for professionals are nurtured through the Fab Lab SD’s pay-as-you-go model, allowing new businesses and independent contractors access to high tech machines without the upfront cost of purchase.
