Folding Surface- decoration application

by Sandro Alberti
Last month, I had the opportunity to continue my ‘folding’ concepts, leveraging the power of the FabLabSD laser cutter. For this experiment, I developed a 3d model of a gift box that folds to include a crystalline decorative form.

Developed from a digital 3d model, this package was then laser cut after an ‘unfolding’ process. The form was developed from programmatic rotation of cubic rhomboid elements, subject to ‘gravity’ forces in 3d Studio MAX. Then the set of shapes was subjected to boolean subtractions of decorative projections.
