FabLab San Diego, is offering Summer STE[+a]M Programs in partnership with La Jolla Country Day and Girls Scouts for Middle and High School students.
Students from any school are welcome!
These classes are based on the ‘Maker’ philosophy that the Fab Lab San Diego program has developed in response to the need to inspire students while engaging them in learning next generation technology. This Fab Lab curriculum included hands-on, experience-driven activities on fields such as Electronics and Programming Microcontrollers, Interactive Graphics and Environments, Industrial Design and 3D Printing!

Courses run: Monday-Friday
Session 1: 9:00AM – 12:00 noon

ELECTRONICS TRACK: ELECTRONICS AND PROGRAMMING MICROCONTROLLERS (GRADES 5-8)
The Electronics track offers an introductory overview for new students and a refresher course for returning students, leading into a more advanced use of electronic components and microcontrollers to make personalized robotic creations. This track is designed for students who are beginners as well as those who have some previous experience with electronics, computer programming or robotics. The program is hands on, allowing each student to create a personalized project that meets the level of challenge appropriate for each individual.

Students will begin by reviewing the theories and concepts of electricity and electronics, as well as the fundamentals of microprocessors, their place in history and society, and the syntax and structure required to program them. Once we have established an understanding of these concepts, participants will advance to developing their own unique projects using the Arduino microcontroller (a small programmable computer on an integrated circuit). Students will develop personalized projects by programming the Arduino to perform tasks related to sensing and actuating, including controlling motors, illuminating LEDs, and turning LEDs on and off in a particular order.
The end result will be student-designed projects that light up and blink, move around, or perform other functions that each student can customize.
COMPUTING TRACK: INTERACTIVE GRAPHICS AND ENVIRONMENTS (GRADES 5-8)
The Creative Computing track will begin with an introductory overview for new students, or a refresher for returning students, and will advance into individualized projects that allow each student to develop applets at an intermediate or more advanced level.
The same course is offered in the morning or afternoon. If your child is going to attend all day, choose a second course for the afternoon such as Electronics Track or Industrial Design Track.
[singlepic id=1829 w=320 h=240 float=left] In this class, we will learn about coding by exploring the Processing Development Environment and Processing, a Java-derivative language that helps students understand Java and C++. This project-based class will focus on the development of fundamental programming skills, and the creation of applets that feature interactivity, allowing students to create responsive virtual environments. Students will produce at least one final applet that they will be able to manipulate with an input device. This class is beginner-friendly and hands-on. For returning or more advanced students, an option to develop an applet that is able to respond to complex sets of input conditions, perform algorithmic and procedural processing and generate real time output will be offered. By the end of the class, students will have an online ‘portfolio’ of work that they can reference later.
INDUSTRIAL DESIGN TRACK: FORMS, MODELING AND 3D PRINTING (GRADES 5-8)
In the Industrial Design track, we will learn about the processes involved in designing and creating physical products, allowing students to 3D model and fabricate their own products with professional tools.
The same course is offered in the morning or afternoon. If your child is going to attend all day, choose a second course for the afternoon such as Electronics Track or Computing Track.
[singlepic id=1947 w=320 h=240 float=left] In this class, students will explore product development, design techniques, and 3-dimensional modeling methods. Through hands-on projects, students will advance to learning how to create forms in a 3D modeling environment and will use a 3D printer to make final physical replicas of their designs. While exploring methods of visual communication, students will develop an applied understanding of industry-standard 3D modeling software, and design preparation for CNC machines. This class will introduce students to cutting edge technologies, while exploring the past, current and future reality of industrial design, personal manufacturing and 3D printing.
This project-based program will walk the students through a learning experience that concludes in the manufacturing of a useful object of the students’ own design.
