STEM Programs for Workforce Development

Fab Lab SD is working in partnership with San Diego Futures Foundation, ACCESS and JCCS to offer FREE STEM Programs for Workforce Development in areas such as: Digital Arts and Social Media, Graphic Design and Fabrication for low-income young adults.

This initiative is part of The federal Workforce Investment Act (WIA) which purpose is to promote an increase in the employment, job retention, earnings, and occupational skills improvement by participants.
Our programs offer a variety of services including: classroom and web-based training, career exploration opportunities including internships, job preparation and placement.

Digital Design, Blogging and Social Media – San Diego Futures Foundation

In this program, students learn how to use industry standard software to create your own logo and they’re also in charge of designing flyers and marketing materials for self-promotion to be used on the web and printing format. If you have always wanted to let your creative work be seen, this is a great place to start building your portfolio.

Working closely with a designer the students learn how websites, mobile applications, blogs, and social media have become standard additions to the way people stay connected to and interact with news and events, during this course you’ll acquire a robust skill set via project-based experience with the tools that produce online content emphasizing the role of self-branding in modern journalism and the importance of creating a strong public identity.

In addition to the classroom training, students participate in field trips and get support on their job readiness pathway that lead them to apply for internships or employment opportunities that require excellent communication and presentation skills.

Digital Arts: Introduction to Graphic Design with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator – ACCESS

During this course students learn about design, color, typography, layout and professional printing. They are introduced to principles of graphic design, foundation of design and print production. This project based program develops strong conceptual skills, analytical thinking, research and communication required for creating effective visual communication. Students gain experience through real-world projects using industry standard software and tools that help them better understand the roles and processes across a broad range of careers involving visual design.

Graphic Design and Fabrication – JCCS

[singlepic id=1041 w=320 h=240 float=left] Learn about design, production, CNC machines, and sign making!!
Graphic Design and Fabrication introduces industry-standard vector-editing software such as Adobe Illustrator to create products that will then be cut using a plotter. Students will learn about design, geometry, production, CNC machines, and unique approaches to product design and creation while engaging in an innovative project-based process as they make their own products.

In addition to creating their own vinyl decals and stencils for decorating surfaces, students will learn to work hands-on within a production environment. Through this course, students will learn about the ways in which objects can be designed and constructed, leading to the creation of their own unique final products.
