Meet A Maker: Carol Willing

profileCNW.jpg.128x128_q85Carol Naslund Willing can frequently be heard saying “That’s so cool. How does it work? I would love to learn more about it.” She has enjoyed developing software and electronics and teaching others for over 20 years. Today, she spends much of her time learning and inspiring others to blend their unique interests and technology to create something new, silly, beautiful, or helpful.

What do you do?

I write software and design circuits for projects that help others. Creative uses of wearable electronics and ways to use software and hardware to make someone’s life a little easier. Caregivers. Caring and gentle uses of technology. I’m active in the open source software and hardware community and my passion is inspiring and teaching others.

How long have you been making?

In different ways, I’ve been making since 1975. Art, music, software, hardware, and carpentry.

Where did you learn your skills?

Learning is a lifelong process, but what i’ve learned so far was from classes, tutorials, and reading. My favorite way to learn is working with others: listening to ideas and sharing what I understand to come up with something together.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

Think for yourself.

Who do you do what you do?

I love learning, building, and sharing with others. It’s what makes me happy. Inspiring someone else and seeing their creations are treasured gifts to me.

What is your go to tool?

Books. And a Screwdriver.

“Nature and caring for others inspires me to make.”
