Started by the MIT Center for Bits and Atoms in 2007, Fab Lab now calls Makers Quarter in East Village home.
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]Fab Lab San Diego is one part of a large network of Labs across the world. These labs are production workshops and small-scale innovation hubs equipped with digital fabrication machines and technologies for the production of objects, tools and electronics.
Fab Labs explore the relationship between the digital and physical world, beginning as a project to extend the Center for Bits and Atoms at MIT. The project has become a worldwide network of people who investigate the popularization of new modes of production and invention that will affect all levels of our life.
Fab Labs are organized around a global network connecting 100 laboratories in more than 30 countries, from South Africa to Norway or Amsterdam center to an ashram in India. Fab Labs are building one of the largest networks of knowledge and people in the world that is growing exponentially worldwide, it is expected to double in the next two years.
Fab Lab San Diego is a founding tenant of Makers Quarter – a neighborhood of Artists, Entrepreneurs, and Dreamers located in San Diego’s upper East Village.

The San Diego Fab Lab Provides:
- Advanced manufacturing training for skill advancement at low to no cost to low-income communities
- Access to over $70,000 of professional manufacturing equipment, as well as education, and a creative community network and function as a community hub
- The promotion of local economic development through small business creation.
- Educational advancement for the next generation of innovators through STEM and STEAM education programs and camps for children

- Fab Lab is an abbreviation for digital fabrication laboratory
- The Maker Movement is an international call to action that encourages all to participate in invention, creativity and entrepreneurship
- Maker is an all-encompassing term used to define anyone who partakes in a technical or creative craft
- The Third Industrial Revolution refers to the shift in manufacturing practices due to advanced digital machining, as well as the democratization of the production of goods via advanced technologies that are widely available to individuals
- All of the above referenced terms point to a movement that allows the individual to make professional, high-quality products of their own invention quickly, affordably and without the need of a traditional large industrial manufacturer. This trend is also referred to as ‘personal manufacturing’
